Exclamation question about recovering lost files

hey guys i have a question

ok i have my comp set like this (or it will be soon) i have one 58gb hard drive (C:\) and one backup 4gb hard drive (D:\) these are 2 physcial hard drives installed into my computer ok?

i use the backup one for backups and other stuff

i planning on takin my 58 gb one....making 2 partitions.....like 50/50ish..and installing windows xp full install on one...and a custom install on the other....what i want to do with the custom install is have games n my programming stuff on there...and the other full install will be for web browsing (because our dial up HAS to have windows xp full install to work)

my question is this : i have a few file recovery programs that PHYSICALLY recover the files from teh drive but they recommend that ur not on the same drive as ur recovering files from (as in running on C:\ and recovering files FROM C:\)....if i take that 2nd partition (the windows xp custom) and recover files from my 1st partition will it work? i dont kno if the program works....maybe one of you could recommend a good file recovery program? i dont kno if the program will recover ALL files (like system files n stuff) or just files that i specify? like how much space will it take up on my 2nd partition (in gb?) recovering all these files?

if possible id like a response soon cuz once again im wiping out....but im making a DVD backup so i can have a hard copy and not have to use my 4gb drive
