crashed OS and private folder problems Ok, everything going normal with Windowx XP Pro, then suddenly some crucial system file goes bad, I think it's windows\system32\hall.dll or something like that. Anyway, try to re-install windows to hopefully replace this file and get everything back to normal (used to work fine for Windows 98SE) and it tells me that it would have to delete the entire Documents And Settings folder to do so, which is a big big big no-no cos of my Dad's work stuff being stored on there and would REALLY like to keep it. Normally I would have just gone into safe-mode and moved everything from documents and settings into general hard drive space but the corrupt file won't even let me into Safe-Mode so can't do that! In the end I installed a fresh version of XP Pro on a second hard drive to get functionality back again, but that caused another problem, my dad's folder had the "protect contents of this user folder for privacy" (or something along those lines) so only he could access them from his user area. This means that the new, working, copy of Windows on the hard drive cannot access my dad's user folder from the old, not working, Windows! so summary: -Windows screws, on boot-up says "c:\windows\system32\hal.dll" is corrupt/missing -particular file must be super-crucial as safe-mode doesn't even work -new windows installed on second hard drive -parents user folders on old windows are privacy protected -new windows cannot access user data from old windows for this reason Can anyone help with any stage of this problem? preferably the last part, anyone know how I can gain access to the privacy protected folders of the completely dead OS? |
