Who thinks this is a good computer

Hey i am new here.. i just signed up and I was wondering if this was a good computer... I have always owned a Mac but now that my Grandpa has past away, and the fact i am the only computer guy in the family. I have gotten his computer, it is an Aptiva E Series 244

Processor: AMD-K6 -2/350 Processor with 3DNow! Technology
Cache: 512KB L2 Pipeline Burst Cache
Memory: 64MB/ expands to 256MB
HD: 6GB
CD-ROM Drive: 32X Max - 14X Max
Modem: 56K (v.90 compatible) Data/Fax
Audio: Crystal Clear Audio with premium infinity Speakers
Expandability: 2 available slots/ 1 available bay/ 2 USB ports

It has Windows 98 on it.... Would i be able to update it to Windows XP?

It's not really a great computer. I wouldn't waste your money upgrading it to Windows XP. It has a small hard disk, low memory and a pretty poor processor. I think you should just keep Windows 98 on it and if you want to get a PC then go out and buy a new one.

If you can get Windows XP for free then you should go ahead and upgrade it. Make sure to wipe the hard drive and reformat before installing XP.

I would consider it a perfect candidate for Windows 2000 pro, I used to have a similar computer and that ran great on it, you can certainly run XP though, I have a PII with XP running on it, it's slow though

I like windows because I know that when I buy an OS it's good for at least 5 years with minimal updates, if I bought another mac I'd be stuck upgrading daily security updates and installing a new OS once every few years... what a pain

it will be obious when you get xp.

if you decide to upgrade you will probrably be needing a more up to date computer (say p4 1.5).

enjoy

Windows XP should run fine on this system, you may find that it is a little slow but it should still run ok. You would find that Windows 2000 is a bit slower. As i find that XP better uses resources.

I would be hesitant at taking a free copy of XP though because you have to remember that you have to activate it with Microsoft and it does not usually work if it has been activated before and you are trying to activiate it on entirly different hardware.
