I have a problem that has really got me good.
A while back, I ghosted my 80gig system drive onto a new 180 gig hd (i made sure it was formated as system drive) and took out my 80 gig drive. After I made sure everything was setup properly, i reconnected my 80 gig drive as a slave drive and renamed all the old system folders (system vol info, windows, program files, document and settings, etc.) so that in no way they could conflict with the new system drive. All this time I thought that everything was working fine. I upgraded to SP2 about a week ago and thats when I noticed that my system restore was not working. So, I looked in my system properties/system restore options and i saw that the turn off system restore box was unchecked and it said it was monitoring each drive (C,E), etc. I looked at it again today because i was wanting to set a restore point and thats where i noticed the big problem. I tried and tried but neither the service would start, and the program wouldnt load but... under the sys restore tab in system properties it said it was on and monitoring. I checked the box to turn off system restore and hit apply and it said: System restore encountered an error trying to enable/disable one or more drives. Please restart your machine and try again. When I goto the E drive under the available drives area and goto settings, it says that (E:) is the system drive and that i cannot turn it off unless i turn it off for all drives (this is the 80 gig hd that I used to have as my main drive...) So, i cannot disable it. Further on, if I disable my 80 gig HD (E:) in my device manager and restart the computer, when i try to goto system restore tab in system properties, it errors out and force closes. apparantly because it cant find the system drive... or what it thinks the system drive is. When I goto the windows/inf folder and try to reinstall system restore (sr.inf), I point to the C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 directory where the SP2 stuff is located and in seconds it brings up a dialog box saying error: Installation failed. Can anybody help me with this issue? I definately do not want to reinstall xp... with all the stuff I have, i can lose alot. |
