problems installing kernel in yast

Hi,

A limited knowledge linux guy might be about to burn his fingers.

Can someone give some advice please.

I'm having trouble with vmware and a 'googled' post suggests a different
kernel.

This is my current output of unmae

Linux linux 2.4.21-166-athlon #1 Thu Dec 18 18:24:05 UTC 2003 i686
athlon i386 GNU/Linux

Its been stated that using k_athlon-2.4.21-144 will solve the problem.

Which would appear to be an earlier athlon kernel ??? My current kernel came down from
yasts online update.

I've backed up everything suggested (not sure I'd be able to recover it
though) I've removed vmware.

I got the required rpm from the suse ftp site and tried installing it
with yast. (clicking "install with yast" from konquerer, it normally
works)

but when i set the kernel component to 'update' and accept this yast
says it can't find it on the media.

I might be pushing my envelope too much here but could someone offer
some advice or point me in the direction of some reading i should do.

regards.
