Cable TV -- Man with GPS and U.S. topos locates hidden ponds?

This message is in regards to a short news clip broadcast either Saturday
July 31 or Sunday August 1, 2004 on cable TV.

The story was of a man who drives around the country with a topographic map
and a GPS to find hidden water ponds that are not known to the public. When
he finds a hidden pond he usually celebrates by going for a swim in it.

He has written 3 books about the subject, basically travel guides to locate
these ponds yourself in the West, Southwest and I think the Pacific
Northwest or New England. I can't seem to recall his name or the names of
his books. His book sales allow him to travel the country full-time to
pursue these lost ponds.

I can't find any reference to him on the cable stations websites.

Any observant viewer this past weekend catches his name or the name of his
books?

I didn't see him on TV but it sounds like you are talking about Pancho Dole
and his books on swimming holes.
There was an article about him in Nat. Geo Adventure last year.

I find it hard to believe that he's going to find anything the locals
don't know about. It may not show up on a public map, but the people
who live there are going to know about it.

There's a pond on my property that doesn't show on any map, but
everybody in the neighborhood knows it's there.
