Palm has not released a new wireless unit since the i705. John | | | | 05-15-2004, 09:40 PM | #2 | | | Re: Is web clipping dead? Why should they release another 7something when a SmartPhone will do all that and more, and PalmOne does smartphones now, too. I have four pqas on my Kyocera 7135 smartphone: MapQuest, Moviefone, Verizon Superpages and the Weather Channel. -- Jeffrey Kaplan <*> www.gordol.org The from userid is killfiled <*> Send personal mail to gordol "We must all hear the universal call to like your neighbor just like you like to be liked yourself." They released the Tungsten W (GSM/GPRS), Tungsten T series (Bluetooth), Tungsten C (WiFi), Zire 72 (Bluetooth), and with the merger with Handspring, you can count the four wireless Treo models (CDMA, GSM/GPRS). Wireless isn't dead, it's just devices that use the very-expensive Mobitex network like the i705 and VIIx that are dead. INetLib was done to provide an interface to Palm.net's proxies using the Mobitex network. They hacked in a layer that worked through NetLib in the version for Palm OS 3.5, but it still relied on there being a proxy service in the middle. It also had a very complex, underdocumented interface and a lot of bad error conditions that were hard to program around. Web Clipping was built around INetLib. While, IMO, it would be possible to reimplement web clipping on NetLib pretty easily, Palm decided to go with conventional web browser technology with device-side caching, rather than continue that technology, and that's why INetLib and Web Clipping weren't ported to Palm OS 5. | | | | 05-16-2004, 11:50 AM | #4 | | | Re: Is web clipping dead? So the only Palm devices that can do web clipping are the Palm VII series and i705? I doubt the Wi-fi units can do web clipping, and besides when I meant wireless I never meant anything like Wi-fi or bluetooth for a number of reasons. 1) Wi-fi is limited to hotspots 2) BlueTooth is not compatible with SprintPCS at this time With my trusty PalmVIIX I can get on the Internet almost anywhere. What I fear is that companies will start dropping their pqa's. But then again I realize there are hundreds of thousands of i705 and Palm VII series users. So it may take some time. The Palm Tugstun W is not that attractive with its tiny phone keypad. Man I can work better with a SpringPCS phone and PalmVIIx, than using one smartphone. Palm has an Mobile Internet Kit, software, that can be loaded into at least up to Palm OS 3.5.3. I've used it with Palm modem and my cell phone on an IIIxe and now on a TRGpro. Probably works on Palm OS 4 as well. johnw_94020@yahoo.com wrote: > So the only Palm devices that can do web clipping are the Palm VII > series and i705? When I asked Superpages about small-format access from my PalmOS PDA, they directed me to get their pqa. They have no other small-format access that I know of, and their main site freezes my copy of Blazer.
