There is a free program called digifix (try at palmgear) which brings you
straight to the digitizer after a hard or soft reset.
If you are interested in the takeapart solution, my tips are:
1. You need to heat the Vx very hot to get it apart. As long as you don't go
near the screen you are ok.
2. Only take the back off not the front.
3. Backup everything before in case it all goes horribly wrong.
4. The thing that seems to cause the problem is the connection between the
digitizer ribbon cable and the connector. I painted some silver conducting
paint on the last 1mm of the digitizer strips (I got it from an electronic
shop) with a fine paintbrush to improve conductivity. Others have suggested
gently scraping the tip of the ribbon cable.
Best of luck.

Mick:
At this point, I'm ready to give anything a try. I looked at the
instructions and they don't look too complicated.
What I don't understand is this - after the hard reset, it makes me go thru
the digitizer setup again and everything is fine. After I do the hotsync,
I seem to get the old settings back which are obviously wrong. There ought
to be a way to stop those settings from restoring.
I assume this hardware fix will solve the problem as far as it getting out
of whack in the future. How am I going to get it reset after another
hotsync is what I'm concerned about.
Thanks
David
