Default SBS 2003 backup runner fails to launch NTBACKUP

Hi,
We have a system with a new installation of SBS 2003 server. We used the system management console to setup a scheduled back. It appears to create a scheduled task that runs bkprunner.exe which is then to launch NTBACKUP. We are having a problem where
the backup runner doesn't launch NTBACKUP. It appears that it will work once after a reboot and then fails from then on. We can run NTBACKUP from the start menus and it works fine. We have setup a scheduled NTBACKUP job (unmanaged - using the /um switc
h) outside if the system management console and this appears to run (still testing this). The tape drive is a Segate DDS4 drive and appears to be working fine.

Any clues why the bkprunner can't launch NTbackup?

Here's what the log shows:

Default Failed Backup

Having same problem. It seems that bkprunner.exe selects "4mm DDS" which fails to mount. When you run the backup manually it selects "DDS" which mounts and runs. I have downloaded the hotfix from microsoft but it still doesn't work. How can you modify bkprunner.exe to recognises "DDS" only. I am assuming this is the problem. Any other ideas.

Cheers

Paul

Smile LogonUser failed. (0x80070569) when running sbs2003 backup wizard

Hi there,

This is a first post, hope it helps!

The problem occurs when one of the security templates or group membership has been modified. You need to make sure that domain admins is NOT a member of the Domain Power Users or Remote USer groups, since these are both DENIED logon as service. You will see in the event log something like :-

Logon Failure:
Reason:
The user has not been granted the requested

logon type at this machine
User Name: UserName
Domain: DomainName
Logon Type: 4
Logon Process: Advapi
Authentication Package: Negotiate
Workstation Name: ServerName
Caller User Name: SystemUserName$
Caller Domain: DomainName
Caller Logon ID: (0x0,0x3E7)
Caller Process ID: 1004
Transited Services: -
Source Network Address: -
Source Port: -

This is a clear indication that execution by a member of domain admins has been denied appropriate rights probably due to the users membership of a Denied service group. The SYSTEM account must be able to log on as Service and Log on as Batch Job. Hope this helps.

If you can help that would be great:

1. This is from the backup log:

Backup Runner started.
LaunchNTBackup failed. (0x8007007a)
NTBackup finished the backup with errors.

For more information about failed backups, see the
article on troubleshooting your backup at the following
Web page: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=18414

Backup ended at Wednesday, June 16, 2004 11:00 PM
Backup error finished with error code 0X8007007A.

2. This is from the Event Log:

Windows Small Business Server Backup failed (Event ID:
5634)

One or more components of Windows Small Business Server
Backup failed.

For more information about this event, see the event logs
on the server computer.

You can disable this alert by using the Change Alert
Notifications task in the Server Management Monitoring
and Reporting taskpad.

Default Keep Group Policies in Mind

If you gave the backup related service account the necessary rights and they're removed the next day, a group policy may be forcibly overwriting the rights on the server over night. We ran into this with our domain controllers. We use NTBACKUP to backup the system state [which includes our AD DB]. Our DC Group Policy was blowing away the rights every night so the job would work once and even multiple times during the day but fail the following day. You'll have to modify the Domain Controller Group Policy and add the backup service account into the appropriate rights categories. Member servers could fall victim to the same issue if the policy has been defined for those machines.

Hope this sheds a little more light on the situation.
