I have selected Windows Media Player as the default application to play MP3 files on my system. If I double-click any MP3 file stored on my system, Windows Media player starts up and plays it. BUT... If I am browsing with IE and encounter an MP3 file on a web site, when I click on it, I always get the QuickTime Player! I can't find any properties in IE that would override my selection of application for playing MP3 files. Why does IE always pick Quicktime to play MP3 files when my system default setting is the Windows Media Player?

This worked... for a while. Then QuickTime began to intrude again. In disgust, I uninstalled everything about QuickTime. Then my system began operating as I desired. Only yesterday, when I updated Google Earth, it required QuickTime to be installed. With trepidation, I installed the newest version, requiring that I install the whole iTunes thing. This is a much newer version than the version of QuickTime I had been using. But personally, i don not use media player as a defult player for .mp3 it eats up a lot of memory space if your used to multitasking with a lot of applications open. Try winamp www.winamp.com a freeware .mp3 player you can DL.

Thanks for the tip on WinAmp. It looks good. I've not been totally satisfied with Media Player. I have some MP3 files I recorded (on piano) with Audacity and exported as MP3 files. When I play them back with Windows Media Player, I am getting a bunch of distortion that isn't in the original recording. I found that QuickTime and iTunes can play these back cleanly. I would check through the settings and make sure that everything looks how it is supposed to.
