Thumbs up Apple Backing Away From Firewire

It looks as if Apple is ending their days of using FireWire in favor of USB 2 in all iPods. I think this is a great move by them as it helps to standardize things. Read the article over at C|Net for more information.
Quote:
With the latest crop of iPods, Apple is no longer including a FireWire cable in the box. The music players will still work with FireWire, if a cord is purchased separately, but only a USB 2.0 cable comes with the device. The move is part of a gradual shift on Apple's part to standardize the iPod on USB, which is far more common in the Windows world.
I'm not really sure by reading the article if they're going to back away from FireWire altogether or just with iPods.

USB 2.0 is faster by a little bit, this is good news.

I never understood why they told you not to use the USB cable when you are using it with a mac....

They told you not to use USB because USB 2.0 has only started being in Macs in the past year or so. And I also heard that USB is more of a load on the CPU than firewire.

Are the new iPods going to come w/ USB 2.0 or have they not manufactured those yet?

It is more of a load on the CPU. I don't think Firewire will be completely abandoned, it makes sense in situations where you are doing heavy file sharing / computing across a grid and don't want to detract from the node speed because of USB 2.0.

Makes sense on the user side though, I can see why they shifted to the new format for the iPod, although I might still use Firewire. Who knows. :)

The shift for the iPod is apparent. There's actually a lot more Windows users using it than Mac users. I don't know if there's a larger % of PC users overall than Windows users, but due to sheer numbers this is the case. I was really pissed when I had to buy an adapter for USB 2.0 for my PC when I first got my iPod. That really burned me up that I had to drop another $40.

Apple invented Firewire, standard on all Macs - still not standard on PCs. USB (1&2) is a cheaper but inferior technology. USB 2.0 is faster on PCs. Firewire is faster on Macs. Firewire is far more capable and elegant and put the iPod ahead of the pack. Firewire 800 however will be on the next (or 7th gen) (Video) iPods (to aid the transfer of HD H.264 video purchased from the iTines Video Store ;-) )

Apple will remain commited to Firewire. Not including the cable is a sensible move considering most PC users only have USB.

I'm not saying they don't already have an iPod adapter for USB 2.0, but it did not come standard when I purchased mine. I had to order one specialy for it.
