Woz, Others Ask Apple To Go Easy On Tiger Leak

Here's an interesting article from SlashDot:

Quote:
"Drunkenbatman posts this impressive article with a pointed quote from Apple co-creator Steve Wozniak and 24 others from all parts of the Apple Software world, criticising Apple's stance against a 23-year-old pre-med student, desicanuk, who distributed a pre-release Tiger build over a popular Mac Bittorrent site. There's also an interview with desicanuk on drunkenbatman's site. (Original Slashdot article here.)"

I feel bad for this kid, and I don't really know about the case, but he did leak Tiger. So, why is everyone defending him just because he seems to be an honest kid?

Because he just distributed it to get people excited about Tiger. Tiger is practically already 100% disclosed. In addition, if your a member of the pro developer club, you already have a copy of Tiger, so you can develop programs for it. In addition, that copy of tiger, and all pre-releases, will stop functioning after a certain time interval. It's really not a big deal, its not "pirated" in the real sense of the word, nor is it truly a full build of Tiger as some features are missing.

Its really unfair of Apple to come down so hard on someone who is really just a fan, obviously a smart kid who wasn't looking for any profit. I mean, I understand they have a policy on secrecy, but they are being bastards in this case, real bastards, because they already have informed everyone of what is going to be in the new Tiger, developers already know, etc... and if a few people get the prebuild of tiger and later buy it, what harm is done? THey wont be able to use it later...it almost demands that they buy it.

ThinkSecret I can't defend Apple eaither really, but at least in that case it was an actual "secret". This is no where near "secret".

If he abused his developer privileges, then I have no sympathy for him. I've signed up for this program, where it states clearly in the agreement that as a developer, you will be given access to *secret* pre-release stuff, and you're not supposed to betray that confidence.

Because of people doing this sort of thing, Apple may rethink things and myself and other people who bothered to sign up may not get access to the good stuff ahead of time. I don't like people who spoil it for everyone.

I thought it was funny when Apple developers put anti-piracy messages in their code. Not quite as funny as some of the stuff that was found in some of the leaked W2K code....
