Thumbs up Mac finally gets its own desktop search

Macs don't have the same search problems that PCs have, so I wasn't surprised that it took this long for a search tool to come out for the Mac. However, it is sort of interesting that none of the big companies that have developed desktop search for the PC released anything for the Mac. I wonder if they even thought of it?

Mac users have finally got their own desktop search tool, after a glut of similar products for PCs in the past few months.Such a tool should come as standard with Mac OS X 10.4, but for those unwilling to wait there is Blinkx, which has ported its Windows search tool, blinkx 2.0, to Mac OS X. It offers users access to query tools and Smart folders (which automatically update themselves as new information becomes available, based on ideas contained within those files). Effectively, the software lets users index their drive and search the Web and the drive simultaneously.

From what this article seems to say, Sherlock does much of what this does... Spotlight will do even more, still.

I think many companies haven't released a 3rd party search program for the Macintosh because there has been no need. Compare the fate of Audion to iTunes. iTunes didn't have quite as many features as Audion, but... which one won? The simpler one, with just enough features.

Right, I agree with what you're saying in that Sherlock is a far superior search tool than Microsoft's "Find". Therefore, having a Desktop Search tool is not as important. I've seen some previews of Spotlight and it really looks great. It will surely be far superior to any of the Desktop Search tools that could be made by a third party.
