I'm sure it will sell to new users. Its a hard battle for them considering there are computers selling for around $399. __________________ Max | | | 01-01-2005, 06:05 AM | #2 | | I <3 Windows Join Date: May 2004 Location: Connecticut, USA Posts: 2,353 | That's an amazing price for any computer: PC or Mac. I'm glad to see that Apple is fighting for the budget market. If they can start selling a lot of cheap computers then they will start to see their overall market share go up. They need to start tapping this lower end market and stop only attracting those people with money. | | | 01-02-2005, 05:43 AM | #3 | | Senior Member Join Date: May 2004 Location: Boston Posts: 261 | The greatest thing about this manuever is that for the first time user, the Macintosh is generally easier to use. Anyone who has never touched a computer before, and there are many, would be greatly attracted to an easy-to-use, affordable computer that completed all the basic functions they desired. I could also see this computer selling well in countries where computing technology is still very high priced , where there are not alot of computers and many first time users. Many adults and working people arent very interested in computer games, especially outside of the United States. Most of the computer gaming market is still sub-21. And if they add their Cupertino-smooth flavor to the design, it would be a smash package. __________________ "This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. They are computer novices so I recommended that they get a Mac. Maybe I'll tell them about this deal, which is nice and cheap and probably a good enough computer for anything they want to do on it (email, web browsing, and word processing). | | | 01-04-2005, 09:08 AM | #5 | | I <3 Windows Join Date: May 2004 Location: Connecticut, USA Posts: 2,353 | Here's more info: Quote: Apple Computer Inc. could decide to sell a lower-priced version of its Macintosh computer to attract consumers already enamored of its iPod music player and annoyed by security problems with Windows PCs, according to an analyst at Piper Jaffray. "We believe that it is not out of the question that Apple would try to capitalize on this opportunity with a more widely accessible product," analyst Gene Munster said Thursday. He noted that Apple has made no comments related to market speculation the company may harbor plans to sell a $500 iMac. | | | | 01-05-2005, 12:52 AM | #6 | | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Posts: 105 | ooo, always wanted a mac, interesting... | | | 01-14-2005, 09:05 AM | #7 | | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Posts: 177 | I guess this is the MacMini, right? | | | 01-14-2005, 07:38 PM | #8 | | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Secret Underground Layer In Kreplakistan Posts: 706 | You still need to buy your own monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.. adding the costs of these will easily add $500+ to the total cost. | | | 01-15-2005, 07:00 AM | #9 | | Senior Member Join Date: May 2004 Location: Boston Posts: 261 | ... if you don't already own them. It is supposedly compatible with a wide range of mice/monitors/keyboards. And you can get them dirt cheap, if you try. ;) __________________ "This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. As an experiment, IDC analysts added "the stuff you'd want," and the final price came to $1,300, said IDC's Roger Kay, who nonetheless applauded Apple for putting out something that lets the company play in the bargain market. Price considerations aside, the Mac Mini is unlike other PCs on the market. At 6.5 inches wide by 6.5 inches deep by 2 inches high, the unit, which weighs just less than 3 pounds, is far smaller and more stylish than "small" PCs. Dell's small desktop PC takes up about four times the volume. Small PC specialist Shuttle makes a unit that measures 7 inches by 8 inches by 11.4 inches and weighs 13 pounds. | For $1,300, you can get a pretty decent PC with more hard drive space, plus a monitor, and many other options. | | | 01-15-2005, 03:01 PM | #11 | | I <3 Windows Join Date: May 2004 Location: Connecticut, USA Posts: 2,353 | I don't know what the minimum cost for a monitor is, but I think it's probably around $100. Then you can get a keyboard and mouse for about $20 total. So, you're really looking at a complete system with this MiniMac for under $650. | | | 01-15-2005, 03:47 PM | #12 | | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Location: Secret Underground Layer In Kreplakistan Posts: 706 | Well, if you want the new Apple Cinema Display (20" flat panel), it starts at $999.00, so there's $1,500 total right there not including mouse, keyboard. | | | 01-15-2005, 03:51 PM | #13 | | I <3 Windows Join Date: May 2004 Location: Connecticut, USA Posts: 2,353 | Yeah, but you don't need a Mac monitor for a Mac computer. Most people do not have one, because they are wildly expensive. | | | 01-15-2005, 04:15 PM | #14 | | Senior Member Join Date: May 2004 Location: Boston Posts: 261 | Apple Cinema displays are generally a little bit more expensive than other displays because they come with a few included ColorSync utilities, and USB port/cables for ColorSync devices. Really mostly for graphics professionals, other displays work fine for other purposes. I still have my 30 incher tho, I should take a picture :) (runs away) __________________ "This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near.
