Problem installing program with Java

Greetings: Trying to install language software for Windows/Mac on Win98(1st
ed). Problem is that after installation and after I first try to run the
program it freezes up my system. I've even tried running it on a fresh
reformatted disk. Has anyone had this problem? I was thinking that the new
version of Java might have this problem with win98 first ed. Any ideas? TIA!
