Default Problem with my Fan

i have 2 fans on my comp. one is in my power supply....and one is connected directly to my motherboard....as of VERY recently (not even 2 weeks ago) i started experiencing problems with the one connected to my motherboard.....it got real loud all of a sudden....and at the black boot screen on my comp i started getting errors .....it said something like "ventilator fan error : computer may overheat. Switch off pc and check for connectors" so i end up having to open my case up almost every other day and connect and reconnect that stinkin fan! as of now im using a program called speedfan and basically turning that fan off....and with doing tha my computer has become silent

but my question is : what option is there in the computer that will disable the fan....if any? like is there any option in the BIOS or through the hardware manager?

i need a response ASAP

It wouldn't be a good idea to disable the fan.. Its there for a reason, to keep your system including your processor, motherboard, and whatever you have installed on your machine cool. If it overheats you will get more problems that you wouldn't want to deal with. You might want to check the fan again, it might need to be replaced completely.

well see ive basically had this comp for about 2 years now and it has NEVER given me this prob....it ran so silent before....but i had gone to put in a CD drive a few weeks back and i had the fan thing draped over the edge of the case and it was only held on by the cord....so that came off but i put it right back in....ever since then its been giving me probs....and the main one is that my comp is telling me that my comp is gonna overheat when it isnt because the program i used, Called SpeedFan, tells me the various degrees of the temps inside my computer....and ive left the fan off and left my computer on for many hours at a time and the temperature never goes above the 100* something mark (the program indicates a problem with a blue arrow for a cold temp, a green arrow for OK temp, and a red arrow for HIGH temp...and i have never gotten a red arrow) so i really dont think i need that 2nd ventilator fan....all that i kno from looking inside my comp is that it cools a bunch of these stick thingys..i really dont know what they are called.....they look like a bunch of 3 inch little metal thingys stickin up in a group of about 12 or 14 or so...

Is the SpeedFan program accurate? Its just something to consider before you do something like disabling the fan completely thats all. I have a laptop, so I haven't had any problems like that. If there is enough room in your case, you could install a water cooling system like this. My brother installed one on his machine, and its has decreased the amount of heat his computer produces.

Its the heatsink fan. Do yourself a favor and just get a new one. Fans do eventually wear out. Open up the case and take some canned air and blow at the fan to try and get rid of any trapped dust.

in response to arunk : no i really dont have any room in my case...its an extremely poorly built case (thats what id expect from hewlett packard) and its quite crowded as it is...but im going to get a new case with like water cooling system and all that....and in response to max : yea ill just get a new fan then....and i already blew out most of the dust and all that in it...i just dont understand why it chooses NOW of all times to mess up....but regardless ill head over to the local computer store and pick up a fan....what price range should i consider getting it in? i dont wanna get one thats so cheap that it just breaks...but then again i dont want something TOO expensive.....

You can find a decent one anywhere from $5-15 at most stores.

ok UPDATE today i went and bought a new fan but it wouldnt work! it was brand new (the label on the receipt said used though) and cost me bout $10.....the only difference in that one and the one i had on my computer was ONE wire was a different color.....so i dont kno......at the moment i am using the same old one.....i did as max said and cleaned it a little bit....and it was really blowing very fast giving alot of air.....but it was doing that when i had my computer SIDEWAYS.....when i put it back upright the fan started giving me the same error....so i dont kno....the stupid chinese lady at the store dosent really do returns so im gonna have to figure out something to do with that fan.....it just dosent work! it spins and everything fine but the computer dosent detect that it is there....

again my question goes.....is there any option to disable that fan? i know that its not recommended.....but if anything messes up the only person i can blame is myself.

ok another update..........the stupid chinese lady wouldnt return my fan so now i have $10 worthless store credit for a piece of crap store.....but i went to ANOTHER computer store (and they're gay too because they charge 20% restocking) and i got another fan.......which actually works.....but the temperature really isnt the ideal temp id expect....but it works....and its good enough so for the time being im all set .....this fan was even cheaper than the stupid used computer store fan! im actually going to go back and get a double ball bearing manual adjustable speed fan so that way i wont have any problems....and that fan is like $12 :)
